About the Department

Goals:

- To provide qualified training to develop theoretical and practical competencies in the fields of social policy, labour economics, industrial relations, human resources management, labour and social security law,

- To provide qualified education infrastructure for the employment of effective, visionary, talented experts and managers in public and private sector organizations and non-governmental organizations,

- To contribute to the production of scientific information in the related field at national and international level.

Objectives:

- To raise individuals who can understand the functioning and problems of labour markets,

- To raise individuals who are knowledgeable about the corporate and organized labour market,

- To raise individuals who can produce effective social policy measures for poverty reduction, community welfare and peace,

- To raise individuals who have the knowledge to best evaluate and manage human resources in all institutions and organizations,

- To raise individuals who are knowledgeable about basic laws and practices in the field of Labour and Social Security Law,

- To raise individuals who are conscious of social, scientific and professional ethical values, responsible, think critically and solution-oriented, prone to teamwork, and have leadership qualities,

- Raising individuals with the capacity to do useful work for their environment, family and country,

- To carry out innovative academic studies for the development of scientific knowledge at national and international level.

Degree:

- The department has a 240 ECTS credits first stage undergraduate degree system in the field of 'Labour Economics and Industrial Relations' in higher education.

- When the program is completed successfully and qualifications are provided, 'Bachelor's Degree' is obtained in the field of 'Labour Economics and Industrial Relations'.

Program Outcomes:

- To have theoretical and practical knowledge and to be able to use them in the working life at national and international levels in the fields of Labour Economics, Industrial Relations, Social Policy, Human Resources Management and Labour and Social Security Law,

- Having the basic legislation related to Industrial Relations and being able to apply and interpret them in practical situations,

- Valuing social justice and having social justice awareness,

- Having written and verbal communication skills in Turkish, having the ability to express theoretical and practical information about the field accurately and effectively, to convey information and thoughts in a way that others can understand, to be able to interpret, criticize and to have high persuasive power,

- Thinking critically, having the ability to reason, identify and analyse alternative solutions, assessments and ways of approaching problems, as well as being able to obtain information from different sources and analyse them,

- To have numerical and statistical research skills and thinking skills, to predict the results of the decisions to be taken in line with them and to make accurate predictions; consider causal relationships, have analytical thinking and develop a strategic approach,

- Having the ability to communicate with experts in other fields with leadership qualities and prone to teamwork,

- To have knowledge in a foreign language including word meaning, composition rules and grammar, to use these qualities in oral and written communication,

- Having basic computer usage knowledge; having knowledge about information systems used in human resources management and labour relations and gaining the ability to use these software,

- Being aware of social, scientific and professional ethical values.

General Admission Requirements:

- In order to register for the department, it is necessary to get enough points from the university entrance exam held by ÖSYM. Registrations to the department are made through the central system,

- If the Foreign Student System (YÖS) exam conducted within the scope of Sakarya University is successful, it is possible to accept students to the department.

Special Admission Requirements:

- It is possible to admit students to the department with programs approved by the university and determined by an agreement,

- In case of passing the lateral exams held by ÖSYM and obtaining the base score, it is possible to transfer from the same departments of other universities to the department.

Accepting Previous Learning:

- If the students can certify that they have taken the courses taken from another equivalent institution and have been successful, they are deemed successful with the offer of the instructor of the related course and the decision of the department board. The department has the right to measure the level of knowledge by applying the exam to the student if necessary.

Graduation Conditions:

- In order to graduate from the department, the following three conditions must be provided:

1- Collection of sufficient credits: These are the credits collected from the courses to be taken each semester. Mid-term visa and final exams are held at the end. There are also defined assignments and quizzes for each lesson. The grades from all the activities defined for the course are calculated to determine whether the course was successful. The proportional distribution of the activity grades is at the disposal of the instructor of the course. When the courses are successful and sufficient credits are collected (240 ECTS), one of the conditions for graduation is provided.

2- Completion of the Graduation Study and Successful Defence: Students who come to the last grade, prepare the related graduation study (thesis) on the subjects of the field they are studying. The Graduation Study is prepared in accordance with the scientific rules and ethics under the consultancy of one of the academic adviser. Studies may be on a theoretical level, preferably an empirical study. In order to get the graduation study, the student's grade point average must be at least 1.8. Students with a lower GPA cannot complete a graduation study.  When the study is completed, it is defended in front of the three-person jury established among the department academic staff. Those who pass the defence exam are considered to have completed this stage for graduation.

3- Completion of Compulsory Internship: Students must spend their last semester by doing internship within the framework of 7 + 1 application. Approval of the internship place is under the department chair and faculty responsibility. The department chair has the right not to approve the internship offered by the student. The internship period is 14 full weeks. During this period, students' work accident, occupational disease and health premiums are paid by the University. At the end of 14 weeks, the students hand over the document containing the opinion and approval of the employer to the advisor in a closed envelope. The relevant faculty member examines the internship documents and gives the required grade. Students who complete the internship stage are entitled to graduation.

Measurement and Evaluation:

To be considered sufficient from the courses given in the department, one midterm exam, two quizzes, one homework and the final exam must be successfully completed. Proportional values of the measurement stages are determined by the instructor of the course. The measurement and evaluation conditions for each course are included in the introduction and application form of the related course.

Employment Opportunities:

Graduates of the Labour Economics and Industrial Relations Department can be employed in the public and private sectors. They are also graduated with the qualifications sought in non-governmental organizations. In this context;

- As an expert and/or inspector at the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Services,

- As an expert, inspector and/or auditor in other ministries,

- As an expert and/or inspector at the Social Security Institution,

- As an expert and/or inspector at Institution of Turkish Public Employment Services

- As a manager in the private sector,

- Graduates can be employed as experts and/or managers in associations, foundations and cooperatives, especially trade unions and confederations.

Most of our students continue their postgraduate studies due to the high quality of the education given in the Department of Labour Economics and Industrial Relations at Sakarya University. For this reason, it is possible to employ scientists at the levels of research assistant, lecturer and researcher at domestic and international universities.
